Battle of Aqaba facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Battle of Aqaba was an important battle during World War I. It happened on July 6, 1917. The battle was fought between the Ottoman Empire and the Arab Revolt. The Ottomans were part of the Central Powers and the Arab Revolt was part of the Allied Powers.

The city of Aqaba, located in modern-day Jordan, was a very important coastal city and port. The Ottomans controlled Aqaba. They had strong defenses along the coast. However, they did not expect an attack from inland. This was because they thought the Arabian Desert behind the city was too difficult to cross.

The Arab Revolt, led by the Arab chief Auda Abu Tayi and British officer T. E. Lawrence, decided to try the impossible. They marched across the Arabian Desert towards Aqaba. This surprise attack caught the Ottomans off guard. The Arab Revolt successfully captured the city.
