The Battle of Arakere was an important fight that happened on May 15, 1791. It took place near Seringapatam, which was the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore. This battle was part of the Third Anglo-Mysore War, a big conflict between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company.
What Was the Battle of Arakere?
This battle was a clash between the forces of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, and an army led by Charles Cornwallis. Cornwallis was a British general who commanded soldiers from the British East India Company and the British Army. They also had allies from the Nizam of Hyderabad, another Indian ruler.
Why Was Arakere Important?
The British army, led by Cornwallis, wanted to cross the Kaveri River. This river was close to the village of Arakere. Crossing the river would allow them to get closer to Seringapatam, Tipu Sultan's capital city.
Tipu Sultan knew this was a key spot. He had set up strong defenses there to stop the British from crossing.
The Attack and Retreat
Early on May 15, 1791, Cornwallis launched an attack. His goal was to push Tipu Sultan's forces away from their defensive positions. The British managed to drive Tipu's army back.
Tipu Sultan then retreated into the city of Seringapatam. However, Cornwallis's army was facing a big problem: they were running out of food. This made it hard for them to continue their attack.
Tipu Sultan's forces fought back strongly. The British army was defeated in this important battle. After the fight, the British forces had to retreat. They moved back towards Bangalore. This battle was a victory for Mysore, as Tipu Sultan successfully defended his capital city.
