The Battle of Escamela was an important fight during the Mexican War of Independence. It happened on October 26, 1812, near a place called Escamela in Ixtaczoquitlán, Veracruz, Mexico. This battle was between the Mexican rebels, who wanted their country to be free, and the royalist forces, who were loyal to the Spanish king. The Mexican rebels won this battle.

The Battle of Escamela

The Mexican rebels, also known as insurgents, were led by José María Morelos y Pavón. They fought against the Spanish royalist forces. These Spanish troops were commanded by General Luis del Águila y Andrade.

The Spanish army was made up of two groups. Some were peninsulares, which means they were people born in Spain. The others were loyalists from Nueva España, which was the name for Mexico when it was a Spanish colony.

This battle was an early step in a bigger plan. The rebels wanted to capture the city of Orizaba later in 1812. The Battle of Escamela ended with a victory for the Mexican rebels. After their loss, the royalist forces left Ixtaczoquitlán.
