The Battle of Guté Dili was an important fight that happened on October 14, 1888. It was part of the Mahdist War, a big conflict in Sudan and nearby areas. This battle took place near a place called Nejo in modern Ethiopia.

What Was the Battle About?

The battle was fought between two main groups. One side was the Shewan forces from the Ethiopian Empire. They were led by a powerful general named Ras Gobana Dacche. A Ras was a high-ranking title, like a duke or a general.

The other side was the Mahdist forces. These were soldiers from the Mahdist State, a religious and political movement in Sudan. Their leader in this battle was governor Khalil al-Khuzani.

Where Did It Happen?

The battle happened near Nejo. This area is in the Mirab Welega Zone of the Oromia Region in Ethiopia today.

What Happened in the Battle?

The Shewan forces, led by Ras Gobana Dacche, won a big victory. The Mahdist forces were completely defeated. Most of their soldiers were scattered.

Only a few leaders managed to escape. Khalil al-Khuzani, the Mahdist governor, got away. Muhammad Hassan, who led a group of soldiers from Bela Shangul, also escaped. They fled with a small number of their fighters, called Ansar, and some Berta soldiers.

Why Was This Battle Important?

The Battle of Guté Dili was a major turning point. It marked the furthest point that the Mahdist forces reached into what is now southwestern Ethiopia. After this defeat, their power in the region began to weaken.

Local rulers in the west, like 'Abd ar-Rahman Khojali, stopped paying taxes to Omdurman. Omdurman was the capital city of the Mahdist State. These rulers also ignored calls to visit Omdurman.

Also, this victory helped Ras Gobana's leader, King Menelik II of Shewa. Menelik was able to continue expanding his influence. He gained more control over the land south of the Abay River. This expansion followed another important victory six years earlier. That was when Menelik and Gobena defeated the Gojjame army in the Battle of Embabo.
