What Happened at Hornshole?

The year before the Battle of Hornshole, in 1513, a huge battle called Flodden took place. It was a terrible defeat for Scotland, and about one-third of the entire Scottish army was killed. This left the Borders area of Scotland very weak and unprotected.

English soldiers, led by a commander named Lord Dacre, set up camp near a place called Hornshole. This spot was about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) away from the town of Hawick. When the people of Hawick heard that English raiders were nearby, the young people of the town decided to act.

Since most of the adult men were gone, the brave youths of Hawick gathered whatever weapons they could find. They set out to face the English raiders. They attacked at night, catching the English by surprise. The young people fought bravely and won a clear victory against the raiders.

Where Does the Name "Hornshole" Come From?

The name "Hornshole" might sound a bit strange, but it has a few possible meanings.

  • Heron's Hole: The most likely meaning is "Heron's Hole." This is because there's a deep pool in the River Teviot at this location, which would be a good spot for herons.
  • Orm's Hole: Another idea is that it comes from "Orm's Hole." Orm was an old Anglian lord who also gave his name to a nearby place called Ormiston.
  • Hornie's Hole: A less likely, but interesting, idea is "Hornie's Hole." "Hornie" is sometimes a nickname for the Devil, suggesting a deep, dark place.

How Hawick Remembers the Battle

During the Battle of Hornshole, the young people of Hawick captured a special flag, called a pennon, from the English raiders. This pennon became a symbol of their victory.

Today, the town of Hawick proudly shows this history on its coat of arms. The coat of arms features a pennon with the year "1514" written on it, marking the year of the battle.

The story of the Battle of Hornshole is a very important part of the annual Common Riding celebrations in Hawick. During this festival, the town remembers its history and the bravery of its young people in 1514.
