The Battle of Huamantla was an important fight during the Mexican–American War. It happened on October 9, 1847. This battle was a victory for the United States. It made the Mexican Army stop their attack on the city of Puebla.
Why the Battle Happened
At the end of September, General Antonio López de Santa Anna of Mexico left Puebla. He wanted to stop a group of American soldiers led by General Joseph Lane. Santa Anna planned to surprise the Americans at a place called Paso del Pintal.
But General Lane found out that Santa Anna's soldiers were in the town of Huamantla. So, Lane left his supply wagons guarded. He then marched his main force towards Huamantla. Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker and his cavalry (soldiers on horseback) led the way.
The Battle Itself
When Captain Walker saw Santa Anna's cavalry, he immediately charged forward. His attack pushed the Mexican soldiers out of the town.
However, Santa Anna quickly led a counterattack. During this fight, Captain Walker was shot by a civilian from a nearby house. His soldiers then had to retreat into a church for safety. After this, the Mexican forces moved away towards Querétaro.
General Lane's troops arrived in Huamantla. They then continued their journey. On October 12, they reached Puebla. Their arrival helped to end the siege of Puebla by the Mexican Army.
