The Battle of Modon was a big naval fight. It is also known as the Second Battle of Lepanto. This battle happened in August 1500. It was part of the war between 1499 and 1503. The war was fought between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice. The Ottomans had already won a battle the year before. They won again in Modon, led by their admiral, Kemal Reis.
What Happened Before?
In December 1499, the Venetians attacked Lepanto. They hoped to get back lands they had lost. But Kemal Reis, the Ottoman admiral, sailed from Cefalonia. He quickly took Lepanto back from the Venetians.
Kemal Reis stayed in Lepanto for a few months. His ships were repaired there. About 15,000 Ottoman workers helped fix them.
The Battle Unfolds
After repairs, Kemal Reis sailed on. He attacked Venetian ports on the island of Corfu. In August 1500, he met the Venetian fleet again. He defeated them in another big battle.
He then attacked the fortress of Modon from the sea. The Ottoman forces captured the town. Later, he fought the Venetian fleet near Coron. He captured that town too, along with a Venetian ship.
From there, he sailed to Sapientza (Sapienza) Island. He sank a Venetian ship called the "Lezza". In September 1500, Kemal Reis attacked Voiussa. In October, he was seen near Cape Santa Maria on Lefkada Island. He then finished his campaign. He returned to Constantinople in November.
What Happened After?
After the Battle of Modon, the Ottoman navy and army were very strong. They quickly took over many Venetian lands in Greece.
The important towns of Modon and Coron were lost to Venice. These towns were very important to the Republic of Venice. Ottoman soldiers on horseback even reached Venetian lands in northern Italy.
By 1503, Venice had to ask for peace. They had to agree to the lands the Ottomans had won.
