What Happened at Maes Moydog?

The Welsh rebels, led by Madog ap Llywelyn, were camped in a valley. Their opponent was the Earl of Warwick, who led the English forces.

A Surprise Attack

The Earl of Warwick heard where Madog's army was. On March 4, he decided to make a secret night march. His plan was to surprise and surround Madog's army.

The Fight Begins

When the battle started, Madog's soldiers, who were mostly spearmen, formed a strong square. They might have even pushed back an early attack by English horsemen. About 10 English knights were killed in this first clash.

English Advantage

However, the Earl of Warwick used a clever new tactic. He placed his archers and crossbows in a way that gave the English a big advantage. These ranged weapons were very effective against the Welsh spearmen.

Welsh Retreat

Madog's men were eventually overwhelmed. They had to retreat quickly. Many tried to escape by crossing the swollen River Banwy, but sadly, many drowned in the fast-moving water.

Who Won the Battle?

The English won the Battle of Maes Moydog. They lost about 100 soldiers. The Welsh rebels, however, suffered much heavier losses, with around 700 men killed.

The Outcome for Madog

This battle was a major turning point in the Welsh rebellion. It greatly weakened the Welsh resistance. Madog ap Llywelyn, the leader of the revolt, managed to escape the battle. But he was eventually caught and captured later in July 1295.
