What Happened Before the Battle?
On July 23, 1898, a United States Navy officer named Lieutenant John William Heard led his team to the mouth of the Mani-Mani River. Their goal was to unload supplies for Cuban rebels who were fighting in northwestern Cuba. However, the Spanish army already knew they were there. The Spanish had gathered a large group of cavalry, which are soldiers who fight on horseback, nearby.
How Did the Battle Unfold?
The Spanish cavalry surprised the American landing parties. They rode onto the beach and immediately started shooting. Lieutenant Heard quickly told his men to find cover and shoot back. The Americans fired accurately, forcing the Spanish to retreat back into the jungle.
Lieutenant Heard used this short break to order a quick escape. He made sure his wounded soldiers were taken onto the USS Wanderer, their ship. As they were getting ready to leave, the Spanish soldiers reappeared. They fired many shots at the Americans on the ship's deck.
What Was the Outcome of the Battle?
The Spanish forces won the Battle of Manimani. They successfully stopped the American landing attempt. Even though the Americans had to retreat, Lieutenant John Heard showed great bravery during the fight.
For his calm actions and courage during the battle, John Heard later received a special award called the Medal of Honor. The award recognized how he helped save his ship. It said that after two men were shot while giving orders to the ship's engine room, Heard took their place. He stayed there until the ship was safe from danger.
