The Battle of Maraycalla was an important fight in 1534. It happened between Spanish explorers, called conquistadors, and a group of Inca soldiers. These Inca soldiers were still loyal to the Inca leader Atahualpa. The Spanish had taken the Inca capital city of Cuzco in November 1533.

The Inca army in this battle was led by a famous general named Quizquiz. After losing the battle, Quizquiz and his army had to retreat. They traveled all the way from Maraycalla to their base in the northern Inca capital, Quito.

What Happened After the Battle?

After the Battle of Maraycalla, General Quizquiz and his army retreated. They marched a very long distance, over 1500 kilometers. Their goal was to reach Quito, their northern base.

However, when they got close to Quito, Quizquiz learned bad news. The Spanish forces had already taken control of Quito. Quizquiz still wanted to keep fighting. But his own soldiers were tired of the war. They disagreed with him. Sadly, Quizquiz was killed by his own mutinous forces. This marked a major turning point in the Spanish conquest.
