The Battle of Puerto de Piñones was an important fight during the Mexican War of Independence. It happened on April 1, 1811, in a place called Puerto de Piñones in Coahuila, Mexico. This battle was between two sides: the Mexican rebels who wanted independence, led by Ignacio López Rayón, and the royalist forces who were loyal to the Spanish king, led by José Manuel de Ochoa. The Mexican rebels won this battle.

A Fight for Freedom

This battle was part of a bigger plan by Ignacio López Rayón. He was marching his army to take control of Zacatecas, an important city. Zacatecas was known for its industries, which meant it could provide many supplies for the rebel army. These supplies, like weapons, were badly needed for the fight for independence.

Why Zacatecas Was Important

López Rayón started his march after hearing bad news. Many important rebel leaders had been captured at a place called Acatita de Baján. He knew that getting Zacatecas would give the rebels a strong base. It would help them continue their fight even after losing some leaders.

The Chase and the Battle

As López Rayón marched towards Zacatecas, José Manuel de Ochoa and his royalist army chased him. The Battle of Puerto de Piñones was one of several clashes between these two armies. Even though López Rayón's rebels won, the royalists didn't give up their chase easily. The victory was important, but it didn't completely stop the royalist pursuit.

What Happened Next

After the battle, López Rayón continued his march. On April 15, 1811, he successfully reached Zacatecas. His army then captured the city. This was a big win for the rebels. With Zacatecas under their control, they could use its factories and resources. This helped them make the weapons and supplies they needed to keep fighting for Mexico's independence.
