The Battle of Sanluri was a very important fight that happened on June 30, 1409. It took place in a fortified village called Sanluri on the island of Sardinia. This battle was between the army of the Judicate of Arborea, which was a local Sardinian kingdom, and the Aragonese-Sicilian army. The Aragonese-Sicilian army was led by their king, Martin I of Sicily.
What Happened at Sanluri?
The Arborean army was commanded by Judge William III of Narbonne. King Martin I of Sicily personally led the Aragonese army. The Sardinian army had many hired soldiers, known as mercenaries. These included famous Genoese crossbowmen and other troops from France and northern Italy.
The Aragonese army was smaller but much better trained. They managed to split the Arborean army into two parts. Then, they defeated each part separately. Some of the Sardinian troops, led by William, escaped to the castle of Monreale in the nearby village of Sardara.
Many other Sardinian soldiers were captured in Sanluri. A large number of the local Sardinian people were killed in a nearby field. This field has been known as s'occidroxiu ever since, which means "the slaughter."
After the Battle
King Martin I of Sicily died a few days later in Cagliari. He is believed to have died from malaria.
The Battle of Sanluri did not end the war right away. However, it was a major step towards the Aragonese taking over the Arborean Judicate. The Judicate of Arborea finally fell the next year. This battle was a key event in the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia.
