Martin I of Sicily (born around 1374/1376 – died July 25, 1409) was also known as "The Younger". He became King of Sicily in 1390 when he married Queen Maria. He ruled until his death in 1409.
Martin's father later became King Martin I of Aragon. His grandparents were King Peter IV of Aragon and Eleanor of Sicily.
Becoming King of Sicily
Martin married Maria of Sicily in February 1390. She was born in 1362 or 1363. In 1392, Martin and Maria returned to Sicily. They brought a military force with them. They successfully defeated a group of powerful nobles who were against them.
Martin and Maria had a son named Peter in 1394. He was the crown prince, meaning he was next in line to be king. Sadly, Peter died in 1400 when he was still young.
Martin ruled Sicily together with Queen Maria. When Maria died in 1401, Martin began to rule Sicily by himself. He decided not to follow an old agreement called the Treaty of Villeneuve.
Family Life and Children
After Queen Maria passed away, Martin I the Younger married again. His second wife was Blanche of Navarre. She was a very important person who would later become the queen of Navarre. They married in 1402.
Martin and Blanche also had a son, named Martin, in 1403. But this son also died young, in 1407. This meant that none of Martin I's children from his two marriages lived to be adults.
Martin I did have two children outside of his marriages. One was a son named Fadrique of Aragon. He was born between 1400 and 1403. The other was a daughter named Violante of Aragon.
Conquest of Sardinia
Martin the Younger was also a military leader. In 1409, he led his troops to conquer Sardinia. His forces won a very important battle called the Battle of Sanluri. They defeated the ruler of a powerful area in Sardinia called Giudicato of Arborea. This victory happened just before Martin's own death.
After Martin I the Younger died in 1409, his father, who was already the King of Aragon, took over as King of Sicily. He became known as Martin II.
