Frederic, Count of Luna (also known as Fadrique; born around 1401 – died May 29, 1438), was an important person who wanted to become king of Aragon.
Frederic's Early Life
Frederic was one of two children born outside of marriage to King Martin the Younger of Sicily. His mother was Tarsia Rizzani, a noblewoman from Sicily.
In 1403, Frederic and his half-sister, Violant, became special children looked after by the Crown of Aragon. This was ordered by their grandfather, King Martin the Elder of Aragon. A royal advisor, Francesc de Casasaja, was told to bring them to Barcelona. He was to care for them until the King and Queen, Maria de Luna, decided what to do with them. Queen Maria, their grandmother, took charge of their upbringing and schooling. Even though they were born outside of marriage, Frederic and his half-sister were the only grandchildren of the King and Queen of Aragon. The Queen passed away in 1406.
Who Would Be King?
In 1409, King Martin the Younger died. After his father's death, and the deaths of his legitimate half-brothers, Frederic was the only male family member left from Martin the Elder. Martin the Elder was now also the king of Sicily.
King Martin the Elder liked his grandson Frederic very much. However, he knew that Frederic's birth outside of marriage made his claim to the thrones of Aragon weaker. This was especially true when compared to Count James II of Urgell, who was a legitimate male relative. The old king wanted Frederic to become king of Sicily. He tried to get the Pope to make Frederic legitimate. But King Martin the Elder died unexpectedly a year after Martin the Younger.
Since the question of who would be king was not settled, a period without a ruler began. In 1412, Frederic's cousin, Ferdinand of Castile, became king. This happened because of an agreement called the Compromise of Caspe. The nobles in Sicily wanted Frederic to be their king instead of Ferdinand. But the idea of making Frederic king of an independent Sicily did not happen.
Frederic's Military Role
Frederic was given the title of Count of Luna. He also became an admiral, which is a high-ranking naval officer. As an admiral, he joined a trip to the island of Djerba in 1425. This trip was led by Infante Peter, Count of Alburquerque.
Frederic also went with the army of King Alfonso the Magnanimous to Castile. Their goal was to free the King's brother, Infante Henry, Duke of Villena.
In the 1430s, Frederic again tried to claim the throne. Because of this, he was put in prison. All his lands, including the County of Luna and the city of Segorb, were taken away from him. He died while he was still a prisoner.
