What Was the Battle of Vystavka?
The Battle of Vystavka was a series of attacks and defenses. It took place from late January to early March 1919. Allied forces tried to hold their ground against the Red Army. The fighting happened around the village of Vystavka in Russia.
Why Were Allies in Russia?
After World War I, Russia was in a Russian Civil War. This was a fight between two main groups. The "Reds" were the Bolsheviks, who wanted to create a communist government. The "Whites" were against the Bolsheviks. Some countries, called the Allies, sent soldiers to Russia. They wanted to help the White Army. This was known as the Allied intervention.
The Retreat to Vystavka
Before the Battle of Vystavka, the Allied forces had faced a tough defeat. This happened at the Battle of Shenkursk. After that loss, the Allied soldiers had to move back. They first went to a place called Shegovary. Then, they moved another 25 miles to Vystavka. They arrived there on January 27.
Fighting at Vystavka
Once they reached Vystavka, the Allied soldiers quickly built defenses. They knew the Red Army would follow them. For several weeks, the Red Army launched many attacks. The Allied forces fought hard to defend the village. They managed to hold their positions for a long time.
The End of the Battle
In early March, the Red Army started a very heavy attack. They used many cannons to bombard the Allied positions. Because of this strong attack, the Allies had to retreat again. They moved about 5 more miles downstream to a village called Kitsa. After this, the Red Army stopped their attacks in that area. The Battle of Vystavka was the last time Canadian soldiers were involved in a fight during the Russian Civil War. However, other Allied countries continued to have clashes.
