Battlefield Mall is a large indoor shopping mall located in Springfield, Missouri. It first opened its doors in 1970. Today, it has 153 different stores. Some of its biggest stores, called "anchor stores," include JCPenney, two Dillard's stores, and Macy's. There's also one empty space that used to be a Sears store. The mall is owned and managed by Simon Property Group, the same company that built it a long time ago.
History of Battlefield Mall
Building the Mall
The idea for Battlefield Mall started in 1963. A company called Melvin Simon & Associates, which is now Simon Property Group, planned to build it. They first thought about having a Montgomery Ward department store. By 1968, they also confirmed that J. C. Penney and Dillard's would be big stores there.
After two years of building, the mall officially opened on July 23, 1970. When it first opened, 93% of the stores were ready for shoppers. It had three large department stores and many other shops. Some of the first stores included a McCrory dime store, Piccadilly Restaurants, and Osco Drug. Just five years later, in 1975, the McCrory store closed. A local department store called Heer's took its place.
Growing Bigger
In 1979, the mall's owners announced big plans to make it much larger. This expansion would add over 400,000 square feet of new shops. It would also bring in two new anchor stores.
When this expansion opened in 1982, about 85 new stores were added. A Sears department store became one of the new anchor stores. A second Dillard's store also opened in a new spot. The original Dillard's store was then sold to a company called Famous-Barr.
Changes Over Time
More changes happened in the early 2000s. In 2001, the Montgomery Ward store closed down. Dillard's decided to use that space for some of its departments. This new part, called Dillard's South, opened in 2002. It allowed Dillard's to offer even more products to customers.
Another big change came in 2006. Federated Department Stores, which is now Macy's, Inc., bought Famous-Barr's parent company. Because of this, all Famous-Barr stores, including the one at Battlefield Mall, were renamed Macy's.
Finally, on February 6, 2020, Sears announced it would close its Battlefield Mall location. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The Sears store at the mall closed in mid-April 2020.
