Bauquay (pronounced boh-kay) was once a small town, or commune, in the Calvados area of Normandy, a region in north-western France. On January 1, 2017, Bauquay joined with other nearby towns to form a new, larger commune called Les Monts d'Aunay.

People who lived in Bauquay were called Buxois (for boys and men) or Buxoises (for girls and women).

Where is Bauquay?

Bauquay is located about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) south-east of Villers-Bocage. It is also just north-west of Aunay-sur-Odon. You can get to Bauquay by taking the D8 road, which goes right through the village. Besides the main village, there are also tiny areas called Le Vloquier and Les Perquettes. Most of the land around Bauquay is used for farming.

The Odon river flows along the south-western edge of Bauquay. This river travels north and eventually joins the Orne river near the city of Caen. Another river, the Douvette, forms the eastern border of Bauquay. It flows north and then north-west to meet the Odon river close to Longvillers.

The land in Bauquay is part of a very old geological area called the Armorican Massif. This means the rocks and land here are very ancient. The weather in Bauquay is like most of western France, which means it has an oceanic climate. This kind of climate usually has mild winters and cool summers, with rain throughout the year. The closest weather station is in Caen, about 21 kilometers (13 miles) away.

What Does the Name "Bauquay" Mean?

The name "Bauquay" was first recorded as Balcheium in the year 1082. The name comes from an old language called Gallic. The word balc in Gallic meant "clay." This word then became bauche in old French, also meaning "clay."

This suggests that the area of Bauquay used to be a place where people found and used clay for building things. The name "Bauquay" literally means "place of clay."

On old maps, like the 1750 and 1790 Cassini Maps, Bauquay was sometimes spelled as Beaugnay.

Who Governed Bauquay?

Bauquay had a mayor who was in charge of the town. The mayor worked with a group of people called the Municipal Council. This council had 11 members, including the mayor and two deputies (who helped the mayor).
