The Bayas (pronounced like BY-ahs) or Baia (pronounced like BY-ah) is a river in Spain. It starts high up in the Gorbeia massif mountains in a place called Biscay. The river then flows south through Álava before joining the big Ebro River near Miranda de Ebro in Burgos.
Journey of the Bayas River
The Bayas River begins its journey at the Ubegi spring, located in the Gorbeia massif mountains. This area is part of the beautiful Gorbeia Natural Park. The river flows for about 56 kilometers (35 miles).
As it travels, the Bayas River passes through different regions. It starts in Biscay and then flows into Álava. Finally, it reaches the Ebro River near the town of Miranda de Ebro in Burgos. The area drained by the Bayas River is about 300 square kilometers (116 square miles).
Protecting the River
The Bayas River is an important natural area. A special part of the river, covering about 4.48 square kilometers (1.73 square miles), has been named a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). This happened in March 2015. Being an SAC means the area is protected to help keep its natural habitats and wildlife safe. This protection is part of a bigger European network called Natura 2000, which aims to protect important natural sites.
