A Look Back: History of the Opera
The story of the Bavarian State Opera began a very long time ago, in 1653. It started with a performance of an opera called L'arpa festante for Princess Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. This show took place in the court theatre.
Later, in 1753, a new important stage opened. It was called the Residence Theatre, also known as the Cuvilliés Theatre. While some opera shows were also held at the Prinzregententheater, the main home for the company is the Nationaltheater München. This grand building is located in a place called Max-Joseph-Platz.
Important Leaders and Awards
Over the years, many talented people have led the Bavarian State Opera. In 1993, Sir Peter Jonas became the general manager. He was the first British person to lead such a big German opera house. Later, in 2008, Nikolaus Bachler became the general manager, and Kirill Petrenko became the music director in 2013.
The company has won many awards for its excellent performances. In 2014, Opernwelt magazine named the Bavarian State Opera the "Opera House of the Year." They also won the "Opera Company of the Year" award at the International Opera Awards in both 2018 and 2023.
In March 2018, the company announced new leaders. Serge DornyVladimir Jurowski became the new music director. They both started their roles in the 2021–2022 season. These leaders help decide which operas to perform and who will sing in them.

The Bavarian State Opera has made many recordings of their performances. These recordings let people all over the world enjoy their music. They even started their own recording label in May 2021, called Bayerische Staatsoper Recordings (BSOrec).
One of their most famous recordings is from 1973. It was of an opera called Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. This recording was highly praised by Gramophone Magazine.
Music in Space
Perhaps the most incredible recording from the Bavarian State Opera is one that traveled to space! In 1977, NASA chose a recording by the company to be part of the Voyager Golden Record. This was a special gold-plated copper record sent into space on the Voyager space craft.
The record contained sounds and images from Earth. It was meant to show any aliens who might find it what life and culture are like on our planet. The recording from the Bavarian State Opera featured soprano Edda Moser singing "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" from Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute. This music is now traveling far beyond our solar system!
