Bayshore Mall is a large indoor shopping center. You can find it in Eureka, California. It got its name because it's very close to Humboldt Bay. This big mall is special. It's the only major shopping center on the coast north of the San Francisco Bay Area. This makes Eureka a key shopping spot for the entire far North Coast region.
Mall History: How Bayshore Grew
The mall was built in 1988. People in the North Coast Region of California needed more places to shop. When it first opened, it had four main anchor stores. These big stores were Mervyn's, Gottschalks, JCPenney, and Sears. A drug store called Longs Drugs also had a spot. Later, most of that space became Petco in 2004.
In the early 2000s, JCPenney became a smaller outlet store. Then, it left the mall completely. Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Borders Books moved into that large space. In late 2008, Mervyn's closed its Eureka store. Gottschalks also closed in July 2009. This left only one main anchor store open.
Kohl's opened its new store in the old Mervyn's spot on September 27, 2009. Other stores like Old Navy and the Gap closed. A local movie theater, The Movies, also closed in December 2009. Borders Books closed in September 2011. After that, Walmart took over the big Gottschalks space. Walmart opened its doors on June 12, 2012.
Many changes happened in the years that followed. Hometown Buffet closed in 2011. In 2013, TJ Maxx opened where Borders had been. ULTA Beauty and Sports Authority moved into the old movie theater space. In 2014, Sbarro closed. A clothing store called Ms. Clothing opened. Staples moved into the mall in September 2015. The Avenue and Wet Seal clothing stores closed in January 2015. A local pizza place, Hot Slice Pizzeria, opened in the former Sbarro's spot. Planet Fitness opened in early 2016. In June 2016, Sports Authority closed. Hot Slice Pizzeria closed in March 2017. A Mexican restaurant opened in the same spot soon after.
On June 29, 2019, Old Navy returned to the mall. It moved into the space where Sports Authority used to be.
Earthquake Shakes the Mall
On January 9, 2010, a strong earthquake hit near Eureka. It was a 6.5 magnitude quake. The mall was one of the buildings that got damaged. Some floor and ceiling tiles came loose. There was also water damage from the sprinklers. But engineers checked the building. They found no major damage to its structure.
Bayshore Mall Today
Today, Bayshore Mall has many stores. It is the largest shopping complex for over 200 miles around. Its main anchor stores are Kohl's and Walmart. Walmart opened on June 13, 2012. TJ Maxx opened on August 25, 2013. ULTA Beauty and Old Navy are also big stores here.
Other major stores include Ross Dress for Less, Bed Bath & Beyond, Petco, and Pier 1 Imports. The mall is easy to reach by public transport. Both the Eureka Transit Service and Redwood Transit Service have stops there.
On August 31, 2019, it was announced that Sears would close its store. This was part of a plan to close many stores across the country. The Sears store at Bayshore Mall closed on December 1, 2019. In January 2020, Pier 1 Imports also announced it would close its location.
