Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bayview is an area in Galveston County, Texas. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government.

Bayview is part of a larger area called "Bayshore." This area also includes the communities of San Leon and Bacliff. Many people who live in Bayview travel to Houston for work. The San Leon-Bacliff-Bayview Chamber of Commerce helps serve these communities.

History of Bayview

Bayview started as a small group of houses along Galveston Bay. It was located between Kemah and Clifton-by-the-Sea, which is now known as Bacliff.

A post office operated in Bayview from 1902 to 1913. After 1936, the community became less distinct and merged with nearby places like Kemah and Bacliff.

Attempts to Become a City

In the 1980s, people in Bayview and nearby communities thought about "incorporating." This means becoming an official city with its own local government.

In April 1985, residents of Bayview, Bacliff, and San Leon considered forming a new city called "Bayshore." They wanted their own police force and the power to make local rules. However, many people worried that the area didn't have enough tax money to pay for city services like police, roads, and drainage. The idea was put to a vote, and residents decided against becoming a city.

Another attempt to incorporate Bacliff and Bayview happened in 1986. Supporters still wanted more local control and their own police department. Opponents again argued that the tax money wouldn't be enough to support these services. This proposal also failed by a large vote.

In 2000, Bacliff and San Leon tried to form a council to prepare for incorporation. However, the people in Bayview voted strongly against joining this plan.
