Baños de Montemayor is a charming spa town in Spain. It's located in the northern part of the province of Cáceres, in a region called Extremadura. This town is famous for its ancient Roman baths. In 2017, about 774 people lived here. Baños de Montemayor is nestled in the beautiful Ambroz Valley.

The town became a spa, or a place for healing baths, during Roman times. The Romans called it Aquae Caprense. They built baths right in the middle of the Vía de la Plata, an important Roman road. People knew about the warm springs even before the Romans arrived.

A Journey Through History

Baños de Montemayor has a very old history, going back to Roman times. We know this because of the old things found in the town center. For example, you can still see Roman ruins at the current spa. There are also parts of baths from the Middle Ages.

An old stone carving found here is dedicated to the Caparenses nymphs. These were nature spirits in Roman myths. You can also find two special milestones, one from Emperor Trajan and another from Emperor Hadrian. These stones were part of the Vía de la Plata route, which passed through the eastern side of the town.

Another interesting Roman structure is the bridge called "El Cubo." It crosses the Baños River. Parts of its arch and pillars are still standing today. This bridge was part of a smaller road that branched off the main Vía de la Plata and headed west.

Nature and Surroundings

The land around Baños de Montemayor is quite hilly. The town is surrounded by mountains that are 850 to 1,200 meters high. These mountains are covered with many forests, full of chestnut trees and other native plants.

Because of its special spot at the end of the Ambroz Valley, Baños has a pleasant climate. It's mild both in summer and in winter. One of the best things about this area is how much water there is. You'll find many natural springs and fountains. These are located both within the town and in the surrounding countryside.
