What Makes This Place Special?

Beacon Hill, Hangingstone and Outwoods is important for several reasons. It is recognized as a Geological Conservation Review site and a Nature Conservation Review site. These titles mean it has features that are important for studying both geology (rocks and Earth's history) and nature (plants and animals).

Amazing Animals and Plants

Beacon Hill is home to many different kinds of birds. You might spot a green woodpecker looking for insects. You could also hear tawny owls hooting at night or see tree pipits flying around.

This area is also one of only three places in Leicestershire where you can find breeding palmate newts. These small amphibians are a type of salamander that live in water and on land.

Ancient Fossils

The areas known as The Outwoods and Hangingstone are incredibly important for their fossils. These fossils are from early precambrian life forms. The Precambrian period was a very long time ago, even before dinosaurs! Finding these ancient fossils helps scientists learn about the earliest life on Earth.

Who Looks After These Places?

Different groups help to manage and protect this special area. Beacon Hill and Jubilee Woods are country parks. They are looked after by Leicestershire County Council. The Outwoods is managed by Charnwood Borough Council. Their work helps keep these natural spaces healthy for both wildlife and people to enjoy.
