Bear Island (Lake Temagami) facts for kids
Bear Island is a special island located in Lake Temagami in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It's pretty big, covering about 4.66 square kilometers (or 1.8 square miles). This makes it the second largest island in Lake Temagami, right after Temagami Island. A large part of Bear Island is also part of a bigger area called Joan Township.
Bear Island is the home of the Temagami First Nation, who are part of the Teme-Augama Anishnabai people. Their name means "the deep water people." Bear Island is just a small piece of their much larger traditional homeland, which they call n'Daki Menan. This homeland covers a huge area of about 10,000 square kilometers (or 3,861 square miles) of land. People have lived on Bear Island for a very long time, possibly as far back as 1000 BC!
What's Under Bear Island?
Bear Island sits on top of something really interesting underground called the Temagami Magnetic Anomaly. This is a hidden geological structure that looks like an egg shape when you look at it with special tools. It's a cool example of the Earth's hidden features!
