How Many Bears Live in Anchorage?
Black Bear Numbers
Scientists believe about 200 to 300 black bears live in Anchorage. This is an estimate from Alaska wildlife expert Rick Sinnott. Black bears are usually smaller than grizzly bears.
Grizzly Bear Numbers
There are also at least 36 grizzly bears (or brown bears) in the city. Scientists found this number by studying bear hair samples. However, this might be a low estimate. They only collected hair from some of the grizzly bears they were tracking.
Why Bears Come to the City
Even though people report seeing more bears, scientists aren't sure if the bear population is growing. Bears are often drawn to the city by food. For example, salmon swim up Campbell Creek to lay their eggs. This attracts many bears from the nearby Chugach Mountains.
Living Safely with Bears
As Anchorage has grown, more buildings have replaced forests. This means bears and people are seeing each other more often. Even if there aren't more bears, encounters are increasing.
What People Thought Before
In the late 1990s, people in Anchorage were asked what they thought about wildlife. Many said they wanted to see more animals, including bears, in the city. It's not clear if everyone still feels the same way today. Some people are becoming uncomfortable with how often they see bears.
Keeping Bears Away from Homes
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) works to help people and bears live together. They have taught people about bear safety. For example, they sent staff to homes to explain why leaving food or garbage outside is a bad idea.
New rules now make it illegal to put out your trash too early. You can only put it out on the morning of trash day. This helps stop bears from getting into garbage cans. The ADFG has asked the city to make sure people follow this rule.
