Beau Rivage is a large hotel and casino located right on the water in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA. It is owned and run by a company called MGM Resorts International. The Beau Rivage hotel is actually the tallest building in the whole state of Mississippi! The name 'Beau Rivage' comes from the French words for 'beautiful shore'.

A Look Back: Beau Rivage's Story

The name Beau Rivage was first thought of for another famous casino resort, the Bellagio in Las Vegas. However, the developer, Steve Wynn, decided to use the name Bellagio for that resort. He saved the name Beau Rivage for his new waterfront casino in Biloxi.

Opening Day and Early Design

The Beau Rivage opened its doors in March 1999. It had 1,740 rooms, making it the biggest hotel and casino in the United States outside of Nevada at that time.

Because of local laws back then, the casino part of the resort had to be on floating barges in the water. The hotel, restaurants, and parking garage were built on land. The hotel building is 29 floors tall, reaching about 346 feet (105 meters) into the sky.

Rebuilding After Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused a huge storm surge, about 30 feet (9 meters) high. This seriously damaged the Beau Rivage.

The resort was rebuilt by the same company that built it originally, along with many other teams. The Beau Rivage Resort & Casino fully reopened exactly one year later, on August 29, 2006. Even though the hotel tower was mostly okay, the casino barges were badly damaged. The Beau Rivage was one of the few buildings on Biloxi's coast that people could still recognize after the hurricane.

After Hurricane Katrina, the state of Mississippi changed its laws about where casinos could be built. Before, they had to be on barges in the water. Now, casinos can be built on land, as long as they are within 800 feet (244 meters) of the shore.

New Golf Course

In November 2006, the resort opened a new championship golf course. It was designed by a famous golf course designer named Tom Fazio and is called Fallen Oak.
