Beauport, also known as the Sleeper–McCann House, is a special historic house in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. It was once the summer home of a famous interior decorator named Henry Davis Sleeper. Today, it's a museum where you can explore its unique rooms and amazing collections.

A Designer's Dream Home

Henry Davis Sleeper started building Beauport in 1908. He was an interior decorator and loved collecting old things. The house sits on rocks looking over Gloucester Harbor. Sleeper kept adding to and changing the house over time. He filled it with a huge collection of art, old tools, parts of old buildings, and other cool items. He decorated its 56 rooms to look like different historical times or stories from books. Beauport was his getaway, a place for summer parties, and a way to show off his design skills.

After Sleeper passed away, Charles and Helena McCann bought the house and everything inside. They kept most of Sleeper's original designs and decorations. They also added their own collection of beautiful porcelain. In 1947, their family gave the house to a group called the Society for the Protection of New England Antiquities. This group is now called Historic New England, and they run Beauport as a house museum.

Beauport has often been written about in books and magazines. The first big article about it appeared in House Beautiful in 1916. It has also been shown in publications like Architectural Digest and Country Living. You might have even seen it on TV shows like America's Castles.

Protecting History

Beauport was named a National Historic Landmark in 2003. This is a special honor because of its unique design and amazing collections. It also recognizes Henry Davis Sleeper, whose design ideas were very popular among wealthy people in the eastern United States.

Besides the main house, the property also has a gate house, a garage, and a toolshed. Sleeper built all of these. Historic New England has changed the gate house into a place where visitors can check in. The toolshed now has restrooms for visitors. The garage is used for storage and office space. There is also a caretaker's house on the property. This house was built after World War II and is an interesting example of a pre-made home from that time.
