How Beaver Got Its Name
Beaver got its name around 1860. It was named because there were many beavers in the local creeks. When the community wanted a post office, they found another town in West Virginia already had the name "Beaver."
So, they chose the name "Oxley." This name came from a man in Huntington who owned a clothing store there. Later, around 1929 or 1930, a man named Grover Hedrick bought a lumber company in the area. He changed the community's name to "Glen Hedrick."
But the people living in the community wanted the name "Beaver" back. They asked the government to change it again. Finally, in 1939, the community was officially named Beaver once more.
