Beaver Falls is a small community known as a hamlet in Lewis County, New York. It is located west of the village of Croghan. In 2007, about 500 people lived in Beaver Falls.
Exploring Beaver Falls
The Beaver River flows right through Beaver Falls, dividing it into two sections. Three bridges cross the river here. Two bridges are for vehicles, and a third is a railway bridge for trains.
Main Street used to be a very busy area in the early 1900s. Today, you can find the Beaver River Central School, a health clinic, the post office, and two churches there. There is also a deli, a pizza restaurant, and a town park. You'll also see the Omniafiltra plant, the Beaver Falls Library, and the Beaver Falls Volunteer Fire Department.
A Look Back in Time
In the 1850s, Beaver Falls was mostly farmland. This land belonged to the Farney family for many decades. The original Farney house is still in the hamlet today. Later, in the 20th century, the Farneys sold their farmland. This allowed for new houses and churches to be built in the area.
Two important buildings in Beaver Falls are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Beaver Falls Grange Hall No. 554 and the Harry and Molly Lewis House. This means they are recognized for their historical importance.
How Beaver Falls Works
Beaver Falls was once a busy industrial center. Today, it still has two paper mills. Interface Solutions operates one mill, which used to be the J.P. Lewis Company Mill. Omniafiltra, an Italian company, runs another mill that makes special paper for filters.
Powering the Community
The Beaver Falls Generating Facility is a power plant located along the Beaver River. It was finished in 1995. This plant creates 95 megawatts of electricity for New York state. It uses natural gas and fuel oil to make power. The plant also provides steam to the Omniafiltra paper mill nearby.
