Beaver Lake (Texas) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Beaver Lake was once a small lake or pond in Texas. It was located on the Devils River in an area now known as Val Verde County, Texas. This lake was about 19 miles north of a place called the second crossing of Devil's River. It was also 44 miles from Howard Springs.

History of Beaver Lake

Beaver Lake was first discovered in 1849. This happened during a trip by the U. S. Army. They were exploring to create a new route called the San Antonio-El Paso Road.

A man named Robert A. Eccleston wrote about the lake. He was a "forty-niner," which means he was traveling to California for the Gold Rush. Eccleston was with the Army group.

In his diary, Eccleston wrote about camping near the lake from July 23 to 26, 1849. He described it as:

a pretty little lake. My brother and I went fishing in the lake... He caught two catfish... There is a beaver dam on the lake close to our camp. No beavers have yet been seen.

This tells us that even though there was a beaver dam, they didn't see any beavers at the time.

According to the mapmakers with the expedition, Beaver Lake was 213 miles from the city of San Antonio along the new road.
