The Beck's tree frog (Ranoidea becki) is a large tree frog that lives in Papua New Guinea.

What Does It Look Like?

Adult Beck's tree frogs are about 3.4 to 4.4 centimeters (about 1.3 to 1.7 inches) long. They are usually dark green or dark brown. You might see darker spots and stripes on their skin.

When scientists study dead frogs, they notice a white spot on the frog's lip. However, living Beck's tree frogs do not have this white spot.

Where Does It Live?

These frogs live high up in the mountains. People have found them as high as 3,200 meters (about 10,500 feet) above sea level. They prefer to live in or near wet, grassy areas called bogs.

Life Cycle and Habits

Beck's tree frogs lay their eggs underneath rocks. Scientists are still learning about these frogs. For example, they do not yet know what the tadpoles look like.

Why This Frog Is Special

As of the 2010s, scientists had only found Beck's tree frogs in five different places. These areas are usually far from where people live or visit often. This means that human activities do not usually bother these frogs.

However, these frogs are facing a big problem. A serious sickness called chytridiomycosis has spread to their mountain homes. This disease affects frogs and other amphibians, causing them to get sick and die.
