History of Bedminster
Bedminster was first known as Bedminsterville. It got its own post office on April 7, 1851. Elias Ott was the very first postmaster, helping to send and receive mail. In those days, mail coaches visited Bedminster three times a week from Doylestown.
Early Businesses in Bedminster
One of the first businesses in Bedminster was chairmaking. Reuben Stever made chairs here in the late 1800s. A very important place in Bedminster was the general store. Abraham Freidlich started this store in 1834. Over the years, many different people owned and managed the store.
For example, the Scheetz brothers ran it for a while. Later, Levi Michley and Peter O. Mickley took over. In 1860, Isaac Fluck built a new, bigger store. This store continued to change hands, with partners like Levi C. Hafler and J.H. Afflerbach.
The Great Store Fire
On the evening of October 2, 1886, a big fire broke out. It completely destroyed the general store, a furniture depot, and several other small buildings. It was a huge loss for the community. However, Lewis Keller, who owned the store at the time, decided to rebuild. He built a new, large country store in the same spot.
Geography of Bedminster
Bedminster is located in an area called the Deep Run watershed. This means it's in the region where water drains into the Deep Run creek. The community sits between the north branch and the main branch of this creek.
