Beech is a small, historic community located in Wayne County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It's not a city or a town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community within Redford Charter Township. This means it doesn't have official borders or its own population count.

Discovering Beech, Michigan

Beech is a unique place because it's not a city or village with its own mayor or town council. Instead, it's a community that is part of a larger area, Redford Charter Township.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a place where people live that doesn't have its own local government. It's usually managed by a larger county or township. This means Beech doesn't have its own official boundaries or specific population numbers. It's more like a neighborhood within Redford Township.

The Early Days of Beech

Beech has a long history! It was first recognized as a community on December 4, 1871, when it got its own post office. The first postmaster was a man named Albert Fisher.

In 1872, the area was officially platted. This means a map was drawn up showing how the land was divided into lots and streets. At this time, Beech was also known by the name Fisher, likely because of Albert Fisher.

The community had a general store, which Albert Fisher ran, and a sawmill, where wood was cut, operated by Dunning, Fisher & Rhode. Beech was also called Fishers Station because it had a railroad depot, a place where trains stopped. The nearby village of Redford was also platted in the same year, 1872.

Beech Today

The post office in Beech eventually closed on September 17, 1906, and its services were taken over by the larger city of Detroit.

Even though it no longer has its own post office, the community of Beech is still a part of Redford Charter Township. You can still find the name "Beech" locally on a road called Beech Daly Road, which helps keep the community's history alive.
