The Belaire Apartments is a tall building in New York City, Manhattan. It's also known as the Belaire Condominiums or The Belaire. This 42-story building is located at 524 East 72nd Street. It's a "mixed-use" building, meaning it has both apartments and other spaces, like offices.

About the Belaire Apartments

The Belaire Apartments is a very tall building. It stands at 512 feet (about 156 meters) high. It was designed by Frank Williams and Associates. The outside of the building is made of red brick. It was also one of the tallest buildings made with a special strong concrete structure when it was built.

What's Inside the Building?

The Belaire has 183 apartments called condominiums. These are apartments that people own, rather than rent. The building also has a health club where people can exercise. There is a parking garage for cars and a swimming pool.

The first 14 floors of the building are used by the Hospital for Special Surgery. This hospital uses these floors for offices and other facilities. The apartments on the higher floors have amazing views of the East River.

History of the Belaire

The Belaire Apartments building was finished in 1988. It was built by a company called Zeckendorf. Before the Belaire was built, this spot was a parking garage owned by the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Who Lived There?

Over the years, many interesting people have lived in the Belaire. For example, in 2006, the novelist Carol Higgins Clark lived there. Also, the developer Arthur W. Zeckendorf lived on the top floor. Other residents included Marvin S. Traub, who used to be in charge of the Bloomingdale's department store. The publisher of Cigar Aficionado and Wine Spectator magazines, Marvin R. Shanken, also lived there. Even the former President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, was a resident.

Connection to the Hospital

The Hospital for Special Surgery still owns the land where the Belaire stands. In exchange for letting Zeckendorf build the apartments, the hospital got to use the lower floors. These floors were originally used to house hospital staff, like nurses and technicians. This helped them find affordable places to live in New York City.

Today, floors 13 to 22 are still used for hospital staff and guests. The Belaire also has office and lab spaces for the hospital. There are even areas for sports injury recovery. Family members of patients at the hospital can stay in guest rooms. The building is connected to the hospital by a walkway on the third floor.

Plane Crash Incident

On October 11, 2006, a small plane crashed into the Belaire Apartments. The plane was a four-seat, single-engine aircraft. It was owned by New York Yankees baseball player Cory Lidle. Sadly, both people in the plane, Cory Lidle and his flight instructor Tyler Stanger, died in the crash.

When the crash first happened, some people worried it might be a terrorist attack. However, the FBI quickly confirmed that it was not terrorism. It was a tragic accident.
