Belknap is a small village located in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. It is a quiet place with a population of 88 people, according to the 2022 census.
History of Belknap
Belknap was started in 1873. It was an important stop along a railroad line that later became known as the Big Four Railroad. The village was probably named after William Worth Belknap. He was a very important person who served as the U.S. Secretary of War around that time.
A post office opened in Belknap in the same year it was founded. The village officially became an incorporated village in 1880. This means it gained its own local government.
Geography of Belknap
Belknap is found in the southern part of Johnson County. It is located near the Cache River basin. This area is known for its beautiful natural features.
The village is northeast of Karnak and southwest of Vienna. A special natural area called the Heron Pond – Little Black Slough Nature Preserve is just north of Belknap. This preserve protects important wetlands and forests.
The 45-mile (72 km) Tunnel Hill State Trail also runs right through the village. This trail is popular for biking and walking. Belknap covers an area of about 1.06 square miles (2.74 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
