The community was found along Bell Springs Road. This road was very important for travel in the region.

Its Location and Name

Bell Springs was located about 9 miles (14 kilometers) northeast of a town called Leggett. It was high up in the mountains, at an elevation of 3,622 feet (1,104 meters).

The name "Bell Springs" was given in 1861. A man named Jim Graham found cowbells at the site. He decided to name the place after them.

A post office also operated in Bell Springs. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office was open from 1920 until 1961.

The Important Bell Springs Road

Bell Springs Road is a long and challenging road. It stretches for 28 miles (45 kilometers). The road is steep, narrow, and unpaved.

This road was originally called Mail Ridge. It was the only main road connecting Mendocino County and Humboldt County. This was before the much larger Highway 101 was built.
