Leggett is a small community in Mendocino County, California, United States. It's located by the South Fork of the Eel River. Leggett is famous for being home to some of the world's largest trees, especially the giant coastal redwoods. The nearby Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve and Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area are great places to see these amazing forests.
In 2020, about 77 people lived in Leggett. The community is served by California State Route 1, which ends here at U.S. Route 101. Even though it's small, Leggett has a gas station, a post office, a school for grades 1-12, a grocery store, a restaurant, and a fire station. It's also home to the famous Drive-Thru Tree! The Leggett post office opened in 1969.

Where is Leggett?
Leggett is located in the northwestern part of Mendocino County. It sits in the valley of the South Fork Eel River.
Nearby Towns and Roads
U.S. Route 101 runs through Leggett. If you go north on this road, you'll reach Garberville (about 22 miles away) and then Eureka (about 90 miles away). If you head south, you'll get to Ukiah, which is the main city for Mendocino County.
California State Route 1 also starts in Leggett. This road goes southwest for about 27 miles until it reaches Westport on the Pacific Ocean.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Leggett area covers about 2.7 square miles (7 square kilometers) of land. There's no water area within the community itself.
South Leggett
Just a mile south of Leggett, there's a smaller community called South Leggett. It's also along U.S. Route 101.

Leggett has a special kind of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has warm, dry summers and cool, very wet winters.

Because Leggett is in the coastal mountains and close to the ocean, it gets a lot of rain, especially in winter. Summers are warm but not too hot, with average monthly temperatures usually below 71.6°F (22°C). Winters are cool and receive plenty of moisture.
