Belleville is a village in Wisconsin, a state in the United States. It is unique because it is located in two different counties: Dane County and Green County.

In 2020, about 2,491 people lived in Belleville. Most of them, 1,909 people, lived in the Dane County part. The other 582 people lived in the Green County part.

The Dane County side of Belleville is near the larger city of Madison. This area is considered part of the Madison metropolitan area. The Green County side is part of the Monroe micropolitan area.

Belleville's Past: A Brief History

Some of the land where Belleville now stands was once owned by Daniel Webster. He was a famous American statesman who bought land in new areas between 1838 and 1841.

In 1845, a man named John Frederick bought land near the Sugar River. He started building a dam and a sawmill there. Later, he also built a grist mill, which grinds grain into flour.

By 1850, John Frederick and John Mitchell planned out the village. They named it Belleville after Frederick's hometown, Belleville, in Ontario, Canada.
