Discover Bellevue, Michigan

Bellevue is a charming village in Michigan. It covers about 1.10 square miles (2.83 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

A Look at Bellevue's History

Bellevue was founded in 1833 by Captain Reuben Fitzgerald. He was a veteran from the War of 1812. This makes Bellevue the very first town established in Eaton County! It was also the original county seat, which means it was where the county government was located.

Limestone and Cement History

The western side of Bellevue has a large limestone bed. People have been mining limestone here for over a century. This limestone was even used to help build the Michigan State Capitol building.

Bellevue was also home to the Burt Portland cement factory. This factory opened in 1904 and became one of Michigan's biggest cement producers. It shipped cement all over Michigan and to nearby states like Ohio and Illinois. Sadly, it closed in 1928 due to financial problems. You can still find the ruins of this old factory in southwest Bellevue.

The Gothic Mill

Bellevue also has a special building called the Gothic Mill. This mill uses a dam built in 1852 by Isaac Crary to produce hydroelectricity. This means it uses the power of water to create electricity!
