History of Belmont
Belmont got its own post office in 1884. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years, but it closed down in 1916.
The Artist's Home: T. C. Steele
A famous artist named T. C. Steele and his wife, Selma Neubacher Steele, moved near Belmont in 1907. They built a new home and art studio on a large piece of land. They called their summer home the "House of the Singing Winds."
At first, they only stayed there in the warmer months. But by 1912, it became their home all year round. They bought more land in 1911, making their property much bigger. They also made their home larger and created beautiful gardens around it. They built a big studio-gallery for T. C. Steele's paintings and other buildings.
T. C. Steele State Historic Site
After T. C. Steele passed away, his wife Selma wanted to keep his home and art safe. In 1945, she gave the entire property and more than 300 of her husband's paintings to the state of Indiana. This helped create the T. C. Steele State Historic Site. It's a special place where visitors can learn about the artist and see his home and studio.
The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it's recognized as an important historical place in the country. T. C. and Selma Steele are both buried in a cemetery located within the state historic site, near Belmont.
