Bemiston is a small, unincorporated community in Talladega County, Alabama, United States. It used to be a special kind of town called a "company town." Today, Bemiston is part of the larger city of Talladega.

A Town Built for Work
Bemiston started in 1927. It was built as a mill town, which means it was a community created around a large factory. This factory was the Bemis Brothers Bag Company cotton mill. The mill was located between Alabama State Route 21 and the Eastern Alabama Railway.
The Mill's Big Role
The mill was very large, covering 700,000 square feet. It made many important products. During the Great Depression, it produced handbags. Later, during World War II, it made sandbags that were used by soldiers.
Life in Bemiston
The company made sure Bemiston had everything its workers needed. The community had its own school, a general store, and even a place to fix cars. There was also a nurses' office and a gymnasium for sports. The company even built its own power plant and systems for water and sewer.
Fun and Homes
To keep everyone active, a special director was hired. This person helped create community baseball and basketball teams. The houses for the workers were quite nice. They were built from California Redwood wood. Each house had a two-car garage and running hot and cold water. The company also started a dairy farm with 68 Holstein cattle to provide fresh milk for the residents.
Changes Over Time
The Bemis company closed its mill in 1979. However, another company, Master Brand Industries, bought the factory. They started making cabinets there. Because of its unique history, Bemiston has been recognized. It is now listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.

Bemiston was counted in the U.S. Census in 1950. At that time, it was an unincorporated community, meaning it wasn't officially part of a city.
