Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) is a large public university in Beersheba, Israel. It is a place where students and professors do a lot of important research. The university is named after David Ben-Gurion, who was Israel's first leader.

BGU was started in 1969. Today, it has five campuses. Three are in Beersheba, one is in Sede Boqer, and another is in Eilat. About 20,000 students study there. The university has special research centers. These include places for studying biotechnology, tiny materials (nanoscale science), and desert environments.

Discovering BGU's Story

Ben-Gurion University began in 1969. It was first called the University of the Negev. Its main goal was to help the Negev desert grow and develop. This desert makes up more than half of Israel.

The university was later renamed after David Ben-Gurion. He was Israel's first prime minister. He strongly believed that the future of the country was in this desert region. After he passed away in 1973, the university was given his name.

In 2016, the university received a huge gift of about $400 million. This was from Dr. Howard and Lottie Marcus. It was the largest gift ever given to an Israeli university. This amazing donation helped the university a lot.

Learning and Research at BGU

Ben-Gurion University is known for its strong academic programs. It is ranked among the top universities in the world. It is also highly ranked for younger universities and for its computer science programs.

Computer Science at BGU

The computer science program at BGU started in 1978. It was one of the first in Israel to teach students using modern methods. Students learned a programming language called Pascal. They also used computer terminals instead of old punch-card machines. This is where the university's strong Computer Science Department began.

The Medical School for International Health (MSIH)

The MSIH is a special medical school at BGU. It started in 1997. It is a four-year program taught in English. Students learn about global health, which means health issues around the world. Most students come from the United States and Canada.

In October 2019, a new group of MSIH students received their white coats. This is a special ceremony for future doctors.
