Ben Bocquelet's Career
When Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe started in 2007, Ben Bocquelet joined the team. His job was to help other people share their cartoon ideas with Cartoon Network. Later, the studio asked everyone to come up with their own show ideas. Ben decided to use some old characters he had created for commercials. He put them all together in a show set in a school.
The people in charge at Turner Broadcasting System really liked his idea. So, they decided to make the show, which became The Amazing World of Gumball.
What Inspired Ben?
Ben Bocquelet has said that famous artists like Hayao Miyazaki and Akira Toriyama greatly influenced his work. He also found inspiration in the 1988 movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

After working at another studio, Ben was encouraged to join the new Cartoon Network studio in London. He helped others with their ideas, but he also came up with his own. His first idea was a show about cartoon characters who didn't fit in, going to a special school. However, the producers thought this idea was too sad.
So, Ben changed his idea to be more cheerful. He made it a family comedy show. The producers loved this new idea! Work then began on The Amazing World of Gumball. The show first aired on Cartoon Network on May 3, 2011. Ben named some characters after his own family members. Nicole, Richard, and Anais were named after his mother, father, and sister. In 2011, Ben shared that the Watterson family in the show was named after Bill Watterson. He was the creator of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes.
On September 6, 2016, Ben Bocquelet announced he would leave the show after its sixth season was finished. However, the show's production continued. Later, on October 7, 2018, he shared a post that suggested the show would end after season six. But the writer of that post later said more seasons might still be possible.
After The Amazing World of Gumball TV series ended, many fans had mixed feelings about its ending. Ben Bocquelet said he would create a movie to finish the story. The movie was officially announced on February 17, 2021. Its working title was The Amazing World of Gumball Movie. On September 21, 2021, HBO Max and Cartoon Network confirmed the movie was being made. Its new title was The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie!. The movie was planned for release on HBO Max, but those plans changed in August 2022. This happened because HBO got new management. However, the movie is still being made.
