Benjamin Bocquelet (born 27 June 1980) is a talented French animator, writer, director, and producer. He is most famous for creating and being the main producer of the popular Cartoon Network show The Amazing World of Gumball. He also directed a short film called The Hell's Kitchen in 2003.

When Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe started in 2007, Ben was hired to help other people share their cartoon ideas with Cartoon Network. Later, the studio asked everyone to come up with their own show ideas. Ben decided to use some characters he had created for commercials that hadn't been used. He put them all together in a show set in a school. The people in charge at Cartoon Network really liked his idea, and that's how The Amazing World of Gumball got started!

Ben Bocquelet's Career

Creating The Amazing World of Gumball

After working at another studio, Ben was encouraged to join the new Cartoon Network studio in London. This studio was called Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe. His job was to help other artists pitch their ideas for new shows. While doing this, he came up with his own idea.

He first thought of a show called Gumball about cartoon characters who were "rejected" and went to a special school. But the producers felt this idea was a bit too sad. So, Ben changed his idea to make it more cheerful. He turned it into a family comedy show, which is what we know today. The producers loved this new idea!

Work began on The Amazing World of Gumball, and it first aired on Cartoon Network on May 3, 2011. Ben even named some of the characters after his own family members. Nicole, Richard, and Anais are named after his mother, father, and sister. In 2011, Ben shared on Twitter that the Watterson family got their last name from Bill Watterson, who created the famous comic strip Calvin and Hobbes.

On September 6, 2016, Ben announced that he would be leaving the show after Season 6 was finished. However, the show's production would continue. Later, on October 7, 2018, he shared an article that said the show would end after the sixth season. But the writer of that article later said that more seasons might still be possible.

After the final episode of The Amazing World of Gumball aired, many fans had different feelings about how it ended. Ben said he would create a movie to finish the story and answer questions left by the ending. The movie was officially announced on February 17, 2021, with the working title The Amazing World of Gumball Movie. On September 21, 2021, HBO Max and Cartoon Network confirmed the movie was approved and would be called The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie!. In August 2022, the plan for the movie to be released on HBO Max changed, but the movie is still being made.
