Ben Kelso (born April 11, 1949) is an American former National Basketball Association (NBA) player. He played for the Detroit Pistons. After his playing career, he became a successful basketball coach. He worked with many school teams in the Detroit area.

Ben Kelso's Basketball Journey
Ben Kelso started his basketball journey at Central Michigan University. He was a talented player there. In 1973, the Detroit Pistons chose him in the NBA draft. He played for the Pistons from 1973 to 1974.
Early Coaching Career
After his time as a professional player, Kelso began coaching. In 1976, he became an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University. He helped the team for three seasons.
High School Coaching Success
Kelso spent many years coaching high school basketball. He coached at Detroit's Cooley High School for 14 years. During his time there, his team won three state championships in a row. This happened in 1987, 1988, and 1989. His success was even featured in Sports Illustrated magazine.
In 1998, Kelso moved to Southfield High School. He coached and was also the athletic director. He helped improve the girls' basketball program. Under his guidance, the team won two state championships.
Facing Challenges
In 2002, Kelso faced a difficult situation at Southfield High School. He was accused of misusing school funds. However, police and the District Attorney's Office found no strong evidence against him. Later, a special commission decided that he had been wrongly removed from his job. They advised that he should get his job back.
After this, Kelso took a new job as a gym instructor. He worked at the Arthur Ashe Academy in Southfield. Later, he became the head coach at Mumford High School.
Recent Coaching Roles
In 2013, Kelso became the head coach for the boys' varsity basketball team at Waterford Kettering High School. After one season there, he moved to Pontiac High School. He also runs his own basketball training program. This program helps young players, college athletes, and even professional players in Michigan. Since 2018, he has been coaching at Mumford High School again.
