The Ben Major grevillea, also known as Grevillea floripendula, is a special type of shrub. It grows low to the ground or spreads out wide. You can only find it in a small part of central western Victoria, Australia.
This plant can grow up to 1 metre (about 3 feet) tall. It can also spread out to be 3 metres (about 10 feet) wide. Its flowers hang down from a long, thin stem called a peduncle. The flowers are usually green-grey to purplish-brown. They bloom between October and December, which is mid-spring to early summer in Australia.

Discovering the Ben Major Grevillea
A botanist named Raymond Smith first officially described this plant. He wrote about it in a science journal called Muelleria in 1981.
Scientists have found two slightly different types of this plant:
- The Ben Major form
- The Musical Gully form
Where Does It Live?
The Grevillea floripendula grows in dry sclerophyll forests. These forests have tough, dry leaves. You can find this plant in a specific area north of Beaufort. This area is located between Waterloo and the Ben Major Forest.
Protecting This Special Plant
The Ben Major grevillea is a rare plant. In 1997, there were only about 4,000 plants left. These plants were found in 21 separate groups in their natural home.
Because it's so rare, this plant is listed as "Vulnerable". This means it needs special protection. It is protected under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. It is also listed as "threatened" in Victoria under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.
