Ben Reid's Personal Life
Ben Reid grew up in a town called Wangaratta in Victoria, Australia. He went to school at Galen Catholic College. Ben comes from a family of footballers. His dad, Bruce Reid, also played AFL for the Footscray and Carlton teams. Ben's younger brother, Sam Reid, is also an AFL player for the Sydney Swans.
Ben Reid's AFL Journey
Ben Reid was chosen by Collingwood in the 2006 AFL Draft. He was the eighth player picked overall. When he joined Collingwood, he was given the number 20 jersey. This jersey was previously worn by Chris Tarrant.
Starting His Career
Ben made his first appearance for Collingwood in 2007. He was only 18 years old at the time, making him one of the youngest players in the AFL. When he first started, Ben was expected to play as a forward (someone who scores goals). However, he later became known as one of the best key defenders in the game. Before joining Collingwood, he played for teams like the Murray Bushrangers and Wangaratta Rovers.
A Big Year: 2010
Before 2010, Ben had only played a few games. But 2010 was his breakout year! He played 21 games out of a possible 26. In the middle of the season, he was nominated for the AFL Rising Star award, which celebrates young, talented players.
Ben played in both Grand Finals against the St Kilda Saints. In the second Grand Final (the replay), he got a leg injury. Even with a broken bone in his leg, he bravely wanted to keep playing! Collingwood won the Grand Final that year, making Ben a premiership player.
All-Star Recognition: 2011
Ben continued his excellent form in 2011. His great play earned him a spot in the 2011 All-Australian team. This team is made up of the best players from across the league. He was chosen as a centre half-back. He also finished seventh in the Copeland Trophy, which is Collingwood's award for their best and fairest player.
Saying Goodbye to Football
After a long career, Ben Reid announced he was retiring from AFL football in late 2020. He had faced some injuries, which limited him to only two games in his final season. He played a total of 152 games and kicked 73 goals for Collingwood.
