Benicull de Xúquer is a small town in Spain. It is located in the Valencian Community, which is an autonomous community in the country. The town is part of the Ribera Baixa area. In 2003, fewer than a thousand people lived there.

Benicull de Xúquer is a small place. It sits on the right side of the River Júcar. This river flows through a low area. The town itself is quite small, covering only about 3.56 square kilometers.

A Quick Look at History

The name Benicull was first written down in 1914. But people lived here much earlier! Scientists have found old things from the Stone Age and Bronze Age in a spot called La Pedrera.

The town of Benicull has a very short history as its own municipality. It used to be part of another town called Polinyà de Xúquer. In 1987, Benicull became a separate local area. Then, in 2003, it officially became its own independent town. At that time, 855 people lived there.

What Does Benicull Do?

The main activity in Benicull is farming. Farmers mostly grow citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. This is a very important part of the town's economy.

Fun Festivals and Traditions

Benicull de Xúquer has several fun festivals throughout the year:

  • In the first two weeks of July, they celebrate the Filles de Maria (Daughters of Mary).
  • During the last two weeks of August, they have festivals for their patron saint, Blessed Ines de Beniganim.
  • In the second half of October, they celebrate El Cristo dels Afligits (The Christ of the Afflicted).
  • On October 9, there is a special paella cooking contest. Paella is a famous Spanish rice dish!

On November 17, 1973, something exciting happened. Some schoolchildren from Benicull, with their teachers, found ancient items in a cave. This cave is part of a place called Sima de la Pedrera. They found things from the Neolithic period, which is a very old time. One special find was a bell-shaped pot. This pot is super old, from between 2200 and 1800 BC!
