The Story of Davangere Benne Dosa

The history of Davangere Benne Dosa is quite interesting. It all started way back in 1928. A lady named Chennamma moved to Davanagere with her children. She began making dosa, chutney, and potato palya. Her recipes were very special and unique.

She opened a small food stall. It was in front of the Savalagi Drama Theater. People quickly loved her food because of its great taste. At first, she used a batter made from ragi (finger millet).

Around 1938, her children took over. They started making dosa with a new batter. This batter used rice, puffed rice, and dal. They also added lots of butter. This new recipe became very popular with everyone. Chennamma's two sons, Shanthappa and Mahadevappa, continued the tradition. They both opened their own eateries.

Famous Eateries

Shanthappa opened his own place in 1944. It was called "Shantappa Dosa Hotel." This is the oldest Benne Dosa eatery in Davanagere. You can find it near the Clock Tower in Old Davanagere. Today, Shanthappa's son, Ganesh, runs the hotel.

Mahadevappa also opened his eatery near Vasantha theatre. That original place is not there anymore. But his elder son, Ravi, runs "Ravi Benne Dose Hotel" on Church Road. His younger son, Viji, also has his own place called "Vijji Benne Dosa" near the dental college road.

Many other places in Davanagere also serve delicious Benne Dosa. Some popular ones are Sri Guru Kottureshwara Benne Dosa Hotel and Gayathri Benne Dosa Hotel. Since there are no special rules, anyone can make and sell Benne Dosa. What truly matters is how good it tastes!
