Exploring Benthall Hall
Benthall Hall is a historic English country house. It was built around the year 1580. It might have been built on the spot of an even older house from the 1100s. That earlier house was part of a medieval manor. A manor was like a large estate with a main house and land.
A Glimpse into History
During the English Civil War (a big conflict in England), Benthall Hall was used by soldiers. It was a place where several small battles happened. Imagine what it must have been like to live there during that time!
The Beautiful Gardens
The gardens at Benthall Hall are very special. Two people helped make them what they are today.
- George Maw (1832–1912) started working on the garden around 1865. He made pottery and loved crocus flowers.
- Later, Robert Bateman (1842–1922) added more to the garden. He was a famous painter and sculptor. He created the cool rockeries and terraces you can see there now. His dad was also a famous gardener!
