Enola Holmes is an exciting mystery film that premiered in 2020. It was directed by Harry Bradbeer and written by Jack Thorne. The movie is based on the first book in The Enola Holmes Mysteries series by Nancy Springer. It stars Millie Bobby Brown as Enola, with Sam Claflin, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter in other key roles.
The story follows Sherlock Holmes' clever younger sister, Enola. She travels to London to find her missing mother. Along the way, she teams up with a young lord who has run away. Together, they work to solve a big mystery that could affect the entire country.
Filming for Enola Holmes started in July 2019. It was first meant to be shown in movie theaters. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix bought the rights to stream it. The film was released on Netflix on September 23, 2020. Many critics gave it great reviews, especially praising Millie Bobby Brown's acting. It quickly became one of Netflix's most popular original movies.
Two sequels have also been released. Enola Holmes 2 came out on Netflix on November 4, 2022. The third film, Enola Holmes 3, was released on July 1, 2026.

The Mystery Begins
Enola Holmes is the youngest in her famous family. She is very smart, observant, and quick-witted. Her mother, Eudoria, taught her many skills, from chess to jujitsu. Eudoria wanted Enola to be strong and independent. She encouraged Enola to challenge the usual rules for women in the Victorian era.
A Mother's Disappearance
On her sixteenth birthday, Enola wakes up to a surprise. Her mother has vanished, leaving only some gifts behind. A week later, Enola meets her older brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock. Sherlock is impressed by her intelligence. Mycroft, however, finds her difficult. As her legal guardian, he plans to send her to a strict finishing school. This school is run by Miss Harrison, an old friend of Mycroft's.
Enola's Escape and a New Friend
Enola's mother left clues in flower cards. These clues lead Enola to hidden money. She uses the money to escape, dressed as a boy. On a train, she discovers a young lord, Viscount Tewkesbury, hiding in a travel bag. Enola thinks he is a bit silly at first. But she warns him about a dangerous man named Linthorn, who is looking for him. Linthorn tries to harm Tewkesbury. Enola and Tewkesbury escape by jumping off the train. They find their way back to London and go their separate ways.
Following the Clues
Enola dresses as a Victorian lady and continues searching for Eudoria. She leaves secret messages in newspaper personal advertisements. Enola finds flyers and a hidden place with special items. She learns that Eudoria is part of a group working for women's rights. Linthorn attacks Enola, asking about Tewkesbury. Enola defends herself and escapes.
Protecting Tewkesbury
Enola decides she must find Tewkesbury again to keep him safe. She visits his family's estate and meets his grandmother. Meanwhile, Mycroft asks Inspector Lestrade from Scotland Yard to find Enola. Enola finds Tewkesbury selling flowers in Covent Garden. She warns him about Linthorn. Soon after, Lestrade catches Enola. Mycroft sends her to Miss Harrison's finishing school. Sherlock visits Enola there. He tells her he is impressed by her detective skills. Tewkesbury then sneaks into the school. They escape together, taking Miss Harrison's car. Enola realizes they must go to Tewkesbury's family home. She believes his uncle was trying to harm him.
Solving the Case
At the estate, Linthorn ambushes them. Enola uses her jujitsu skills to defend herself, and Linthorn is defeated. It turns out Tewkesbury's grandmother hired Linthorn. She was a very traditional person. She did not want Tewkesbury to vote for a new law in the House of Lords. This law, called the Reform Bill, would give more people the right to vote. She tries to harm Tewkesbury, but he survives because he wore armor. Sherlock arrives at Scotland Yard. Lestrade tells him about Enola's brave actions.
Enola's Future
Enola says goodbye to Tewkesbury. She overhears Sherlock and Mycroft talking. Sherlock suggests he could become Enola's guardian. When Enola returns to her lodgings, Eudoria is waiting. Her mother explains why she had to leave and why she must leave again. Eudoria is proud of the person Enola has become. Enola now knows her purpose: she is a detective, helping to find lost people and solve mysteries.

Making the Movie
Bringing Enola to Life
In early 2019, Legendary Pictures started working on a movie based on The Enola Holmes Mysteries books. Millie Bobby Brown not only starred as Enola but also helped produce the film. Harry Bradbeer directed the movie. It tells the story from the first book, The Case of the Missing Marquess. Millie Bobby Brown loved the books after reading them with her sister Paige. She really wanted to play Enola. She later suggested to her father that they should make it into a film. Millie then teamed up with Legendary Pictures, who she had worked with before. Millie and director Harry Bradbeer wanted the film to be full of energy, emotion, and unique charm. Millie also talked with writer Jack Thorne about having Enola sometimes talk directly to the audience. This is called breaking the fourth wall. Harry Bradbeer liked the script because it showed families learning to understand each other. He also loved stories about Sherlock Holmes. Millie enjoyed being able to improvise her lines, which was different from her role in Stranger Things.
Filming Locations
In June 2019, Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Adeel Akhtar, and Fiona Shaw joined the cast. Sam Claflin, Louis Partridge, Susie Wokoma, and Burn Gorman joined in July. Filming began in London. Railway scenes were filmed in Worcestershire. Specific locations included Arley railway station, Kidderminster Town railway station, and Victoria Bridge. These are all part of the Severn Valley Railway. The Holmes family home, Ferndell Hall, was filmed at Benthall Hall in Shropshire. This hall had never been used for filming before. The team worked closely with the head groundskeeper to make the place look perfectly overgrown. Interior scenes were shot at West Horsley Place in Surrey. They added false walls and decorated them with plant designs. These designs were inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. The East End and Limehouse Lane areas were created at Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire. The scene where Sherlock and Mycroft try to meet Enola was filmed at Drum Court. This is inside the HM Treasury Buildings in Westminster.
Costume Design
Consolata Boyle was the person in charge of creating all the costumes. Boyle and her team designed, dyed, and made outfits for the main actors and background characters. They made about thirty different costumes for Enola. Some costumes, like the red powderpuff dress, had to be made several times. This was because Enola's role involved a lot of physical action and fight scenes. The powderpuff dress was inspired by theater costumes from that time. Boyle chose red because it is a color that represents courage. Boyle's favorite costume was Enola's final dress. It had the same shape as the first dress Enola wore while riding her bicycle. This brought the costume journey full circle. The natural silk used in the final dress had no strong color, suggesting that "anything could happen next." The colors violet, green, and ivory were important to the suffragette movement. Boyle thoughtfully used these colors in the costumes.
Music for the Film
In July 2019, Daniel Pemberton was chosen to compose the film's music. The soundtrack was released on September 23, 2020. Pemberton described the music as "very melodic and emotional orchestral music." He also added some "messy, quirky, oddness" to it.
Film Release
The film was originally planned for release in movie theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures. However, in April 2020, Netflix bought the rights to distribute the film worldwide, except for China. This change happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Enola Holmes was released digitally on September 23, 2020.
Promoting the Movie
To help promote the film in the United Kingdom, Netflix put up special statues. These statues showed famous sisters next to existing statues of their famous brothers. They also offered a free adventure game called An Enola Holmes Adventure. People could play this game at home.
Sequels
After the first film's success, Millie Bobby Brown and Harry Bradbeer talked about making a sequel. Millie said she loved playing Enola and dreamed of doing it again.
On May 13, 2021, Enola Holmes 2 was officially announced. Writer Jack Thorne and director Harry Bradbeer returned for the sequel. Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill also reprised their roles. In September 2021, it was confirmed that Louis Partridge and Helena Bonham Carter would also return.
Production and filming for Enola Holmes 2 began in Autumn 2021. It finished in January 2022. The film was released on Netflix on November 4, 2022. The third film, Enola Holmes 3, was released on July 1, 2026.
